ARTIST STATEMENT
As a photographer, Tal seeks to create intimate, emotionally-resonant images. He is repeatedly drawn to the sensory dialogue between body and landscape. In this collection, the human form is treated as terrain in & of itself, dissolving the boundaries between skin, earth, water, rock, & tree.
His images highlight how the body in movement acts as an instrument of perception: sensing, exploring, & relating to the world beyond intellect. The result is dream-like images which nonetheless speak with clarity to our known experience as human animals. On viewing these images, our contemporary urban experience is called into question: placing unclothed humans in wilderness landscapes, they contain an implicit, playful provocation to understand ourselves as part of nature.
Tal’s work uncovers how physical experience can become a doorway to connection, with self, with others, & with the living world. Simply noticing - bringing awareness to sensory experience - radically alters our relationship with the natural world. It is an act of communication between us & other beings. The eco-system does not need us to force our will on it; it simply asks that we gently play our part.
Becoming witness allows us to deepen our appreciation, without doing harm. It orientates us towards acts of vulnerability, relationship, care, & freedom of expression - all of which constitute resistance in the face of systems of oppression. When we open to this possibility, we realise presence is the best we can give to the living world. In the end, all we can offer in a difficult world is to sing & dance: these images are a song, & the bodies in them dance.
